«The stonemasons gave the stones their form. We give them back their chant

Eight hundred years ago, the Mestre Mateo and his collaborators raised in the cathedral of Santiago a monumental stone choir: architecture, sculpture and music brought together in a single liturgical space. The strike of the chisel on the granite was the song they were seeking in the stone. That choir fell silent, but its idea endures.

The Coro Mestre Mateo takes up that legacy and gives the stone back its voice: we turn into music the song that already beat within the strike of the chisel. We are a professional vocal ensemble devoted to sounding, in churches, monasteries, cathedrals and other singular spaces, a sacred a cappella repertoire in the wake of the great polyphonic tradition of the Renaissance.
